Still writing

One letter. Every month. Straight to your mailbox.

Dear friend, Thank you for reading along. This month's poem is about getting back on the horse — even when the horse is gone. Alden sends her biscuit recipe, and Merle sends slobbery kisses. — Chad, Alden & Merle

Happy mail, four ways

Each month you will receive a letter from Chad. It will include one of his poems, a recipe from Alden, a note from Merle, and stickers.

A poem from Chad

Words about family, faith and rodeo — written the only way he can still write them, which turns out to be beautifully.

A recipe from Alden

Something warm from the Smith family kitchen — the kind of recipe that starts a conversation at your table.

A note from Merle

Short, honest, occasionally slobbery. Written by the paws, edited by no one, loved by everyone.

Stickers

Because no letter is complete without something to peel and stick. Cowboys, stars, and Merle's silhouette.

Who we are

Our family story

A songwriter, his high-school sweetheart, and one very good chocolate lab — sharing their journey one stamp at a time.

C

Chad

the writer

Chad taught himself guitar on his dad's Martin and was writing songs by 13. After a bull ride in Kissimmee changed everything in 2014, the guitar was gone — but the writing remained. For 12 years he shared his poetry with family and friends, and now he shares it with you.

A

Alden

the heart

A Jacksonville Mickler by birth and a Smith by choice since 2005. Alden has been Chad's caregiver and full-time everything since the accident — a true example of honoring the vows. Her recipes travel in the envelope right beside the poems.

M

Merle

the good boy

A chocolate lab who flunked out of K9s for Warriors and into the Smith family — named for old country music, obviously. For nine years he has been a source of happiness, laughter, safety, and the occasional note.

The first edition handed me a roller coaster of emotions! I cried, laughed, loved and felt overwhelmed with excitement and pride. Y'all are such an inspiration.

We got our first letter yesterday. Forgot how nice it is to receive a true letter. It started a conversation, we have a recipe to make and a scripture to study. This will do your soul some good.

Except for Christmas cards, the mail rarely has anything to get excited about. Well, today was different. Oh, what a sweet letter and beautiful poem — even some cowboy stickers.
